Recent Accidents Highlight the Importance of Driving Safety for Seniors

Automobile accidents involving senior citizens are far from uncommon in Florida. Statistics show that 15 percent of all fatal accidents that occur in the state involve a driver who is 65 and older.

Two recent car accidents involving seniors have highlighted the importance of keeping older drivers safe on the roads. In Delray Beach, a 78-year-old woman was killed at a Walmart when an 89-year-old driver backed into her as she walked out of the store. Similarly, a 66-year-old woman who attended St. Ambrose Catholic Church was killed when an 88-year-old driver backed into her and dragged her beneath the vehicle.

What Restrictions Should Be Placed on Elderly Drivers?

Whenever a car accident occurs involving an elderly driver, questions come up about when seniors should stop driving - and what safety measures can be implemented to protect the seniors who still do drive. There are many differing opinions on the best solution to keep seniors and motorists safe while travelling the roads and highways in Florida.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, research indicates that accident rates among seniors are dramatically reduced when these drivers are required to renew their licenses at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Supporters of safety measures like this say that by administering driving and eye tests to seniors, it's easier to determine whether or not it's time for them to stop driving.

On the other hand, the AARP opposes testing seniors when they are ready to renew their driver's licenses. Instead, the organization supports review programs, which allow police officers and members of the public to report specific seniors who may be risky drivers. In addition, states with these types of measures allow doctors to report when their patients have been diagnosed with a serious illness that can increase their likelihood of being involved in a car accident.

Guide for Senior Drivers

In order to help senior citizens stay safe of the state's roads, the Florida Safe Mobility for Life Coalition recently released the Florida Guide for Aging Drivers. In the guide, seniors can find information that can help them improve their driving skills. In addition, seniors who are no longer able to drive are given information about local transportation options in order to help them stay active in the community.
